Coal

Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock, formed from plant matter that has been subjected to high heat and pressure over millions of years. It is primarily composed of carbon, along with varying amounts of other elements like hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. Coal is a critical source of energy, widely used for electricity generation, steel production, and as an industrial fuel.

Types of Coal Quality:

    1) Anthracite :



    Description: Anthracite is the highest quality coal, known for its hard, glossy appearance and high carbon content (86% to 98%). It has the fewest impurities among all types of coal, making it a premium choice for applications requiring clean, efficient burning.

    • Properties: Anthracite burns with a short, blue flame, producing little smoke and a high heat output. It has a low volatile matter content, which means it burns slowly and steadily. This type of coal is often used for residential heating, industrial applications, and as a carbon additive in steelmaking.
    • Applications:  Due to its high energy content and purity, anthracite is valued in metallurgical processes, water filtration, and as a reduction agent in the chemical industry.

    2)Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) Coal :


    • Description: PCI coal is a type of coal used specifically in the steelmaking industry. It is finely ground and injected directly into a blast furnace to replace a portion of the coke traditionally used in the ironmaking process.
    • Properties: PCI coal typically has a moderate to high carbon content and a lower ash and sulfur content compared to other types of coal. The key characteristic of PCI coal is its ability to be pulverized into a fine powder, which allows for efficient combustion and integration into the steel production process.

Applications: The primary use of PCI coal is in the blast furnace for iron and steel production. By injecting PCI coal into the furnace, steelmakers can reduce the amount of coke required, lowering production costs and emissions.
